The Board of Education shall establish student entrance age requirements which are consistent with Wisconsin
Law and sound educational practice and which ensure equitable treatment.
Kindergarten Registration
The following guidelines shall be followed for the registration of all kindergarten students:
1. Children must be four (4) years old on or before September 1 to enroll in junior kindergarten (JK) or five (5)
years old on or before September 1 to enroll in senior kindergarten (SK).
2. Children must be registered by their parent(s) or guardian(s). Parents/guardians must provide proper
documentation at the time of enrollment.
3. Final class placement will be made by each respective building principal.
4. Assignments to a.m. or p.m. sessions and individual classroom assignments will be determined by the
building principal.
Early Admission to Kindergarten
A child will be considered for entry into JK if the child turns 4 years old prior to October 1 of the year enrolling and
the following conditions are met:
1. The child is a resident of Wauwatosa and eligible for enrollment in the district;
2. A request for early entry into JK is submitted in writing to the Student Services office no later than 90
calendar days prior to the start of the school year;
3. The child must have a measured IQ of at least 130 (very superior/98 instrument of intellectual ability
administered by a school district psychologist; and
4. The child demonstrates consistency of performance across areas assessed and school readiness skills fall
within the advanced range on instruments used.
First Grade Admission
In order to be admitted to first grade, a child must be at least six years of age by September 1 of the year entering
and must have successfully completed SK.
Early Admission to First Grade
A child will be allowed to enter first grade if the child turns 6 years old prior to October 1 of the year enrolling and
has successfully completed an SK program in a public or private school. Parents are required to provide supporting documentation, including a report card and a teacher recommendation that indicates a child is ready for
first grade.
Exemption From 5-year-old Kindergarten
A child who is six years of age on or before September 1 of the year of enrollment but has not completed SK may
be admitted to first grade if the child meets any of the requirements described below:
1.) Before either commencing or completing first grade the child moved into Wisconsin from a state, country, or
territory in which completion of SK is not a prerequisite to enter first grade; or
2.) Before either commencing or completing first grade the child moved into Wisconsin from a state, country or
territory in which completion of SK is a prerequisite to enter first grade and the child was exempt from the
requirement to complete SK; In addition, a student may apply for exemption from completing 5-year-old
kindergarten if the child meets the following conditions:
1.) The child will be six years of age on or before September 1 of the year of enrollment;
2.) A request for an exemption must be submitted in writing to the Student Services office no later than 90
calendar days prior to the start of the school year;
3.) The student requesting the exemption is required to attend and successfully complete the Wauwatosa
School District summer school SK summer program. The student will be assessed by the classroom
teacher in the following areas: social emotional development, language development and
communication and general knowledge; and
4.) At the conclusion of the summer session the district will administer a MAP assessment. The student
must achieve a RIT score equivalent or greater than the beginning median RIT score for first grade in
reading, mathematics and language arts.
Process for Appeal
Families will be contacted by the Director of Student Services regarding their request for an early entrance or exemption from attending SK. A family wishing to appeal the decision of exemption from SK may submit a letter
of appeal to the superintendent within ten (10) calendar days of receipt of notification. The decision of the
superintendent will be final.
The approval of early entrance into kindergarten and exemption of SK is a conditional placement. The teacher and
school psychologist may review the performance of the child during the first quarter to ensure the placement is
appropriate.
