Kindergarten Registration

The following guidelines shall be followed for the registration of all kindergarten students.

    A. Children must be four (4) years old on or before September 1st to enroll in JK or five (5) years old on or before
September 1st to enroll in SK.

    B. Children must be registered by their parent(s) or guardian(s). Parents/guardians must provide proper
documentation at the time of enrollment.

    C. Final class placement will be made by each respective building principal.

    D. Assignments to A.M. or P.M. sessions will be determined by the principal.

    E. Individual classroom assignments will be made by the building principal.

Early Entrance Criteria

    A. Rationale

The District shall provide procedures for applying for early admission to kindergarten and first grade for
        qualified students.

    B. Application

Referrals for early entry are made by parent request at the time of spring registration.

Students whose birthdays are after September 1st but before October 1st can request an evaluation for early
        enrollment.

The evaluation shall be made prior to the enrollment date.

    C. Selection Procedures

The establishment of a program of early admission for "developmentally advanced" children poses several
practical problems. General criteria of intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development are well
established through research, but they must be carefully individualized to suit the unique qualities of a
        particular school.

        Multiple criteria are employed:

            1. A personal interview shall be held to determine the parent's reason for requesting entrance prior to the
                legal age.

            2. An evaluation of the child's potential to benefit from early admission to kindergarten or first (1st) grade
shall be required. The evaluation shall consider intelligence, social skills, gross motor/fine motor skills
and academic skills. The individual evaluation shall be conducted by the Student Services Department
and shall be at no cost to the parents.

            3. After the evaluation in (B) has been completed, a conference shall be held with the parents to consider
the appropriateness of early entrance into kindergarten or first (1st) grade.

            4. The School Board has the final authority for deciding whether or not the child is to be admitted to
                kindergarten or first (1st) grade.

The evaluation shall be made by the principal and appropriate staff no later than August 1st for enrollment in
September.

Upon completion of the evaluation, a meeting should then be conducted with the parents to tell them of the
decision and, if appropriate, the nature of the kindergarten or first grade program.
